Spring Hill Suffers Loss to Montevallo

The Spring Hill College softball team suffered a 5-4 loss to in-state foe Montevallo at Murray Field on Friday afternoon.

Leighanna Turk (0-5) pitched a complete game in the extra-inning defeat at home. She battled through to the tune of six strikeouts and only a single walk.

Neither team scored until the sixth inning of play, when Montevallo got on the board first before Spring Hill answered with a run of their own to make it a 1-1 game late. The game went into extra frames, the fourth-straight time that’s happened for SHC.

A two-run RBI single pushed the Falcons ahead in the top of the eighth. Rycca Hinton, who went 4-for-4 and crossed the plate twice, stole second after getting on base and drew the attention away from Airyonna Weaver, who stole home and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth.

A two-run RBI triple gave Montevallo a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning. Bailey Coxstarted a rally with a RBI single to left center field, bringing home Lindsey Mecom.

The late rally was not enough, at the Badgers fell 5-4 to the Falcons. The second game of the doubleheader, third of the series, was canceled due to inclement weather.

On the game
“Out girls fought hard, we keep finding ourselves in these extra-inning tight battles. I know it’s going to push us forward at the end of the year, but we’re just not executing on the small things in the game. We have to capitalize on their mistakes and we’re just not over that hump yet.”
