The Spring Hill College women’s basketball team defeated LeMoyne-Owen 63-53 in Monday’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) contest at Bruce Hall/Johnson Gymnasium.

The Badgers took the lead about four minutes into the game and held it for most of the first quarter. By the end of the opening quarter, the Magicians snuck up and took a 16-9 lead.

Spring Hill cut the LeMoyne-Owen lead down to one point (20-19) with 2:13 left in the second quarter. LOC still held a 25-21 lead at the halftime buzzer despite SHC winning the second quarter (12-9).

A layup by Tiana Smith, who went 5-8 from the floor and 3-4 from the free-throw line, followed by a pair of free throws from Kellyn Hunter pushed the Badgers back ahead halfway through the third quarter. SHC extended its lead to as much as 10 points during the quarter and held a 42-34 lead going into the fourth.

The Badgers had their best shooting performance in the fourth and it paid off with the lead never leaving their hands for the entire quarter. They shot 58 percent from the floor and 75 percent from beyond the arc on their way to the 63-53 win over the Magicians.

Marta Duda led the game with her fourth double-double of the season that featured 18 points and 18 rebounds, 13 of which were defensive.
