Spring Hill College Athletics mourns the loss of men’s basketball alumnus Cas Bacinskas (’72).
Bacinskas was a hard-nosed and skilled star guard out of St. Ignatius High School in Chicago, Ill., who played for the Badgers for three seasons before a knee injury ended his career.
One of the highlights of his college career was when he helped lead Spring Hill to a comeback victory over crosstown rival South Alabama during his sophomore year. Down 12 points with five minutes to play, the Badgers went to a full court press and a Bacinskas steal and layup put the Badgers on top 78-77. Bacinskas was credited with three steals in the last minute and half of the game.
One of his teammates remembers Cas for his subtle sense of humor and as skilled fishermen. He could not only reel in some fish down at Dauphin Island, but also fry it up in the dorm to his teammates’ delight.
He was the father of Dr. Kazimieras (Sylwia) Baczinskas and grandfather of Bronson & Luca. Cas was a partner of Bacino’s Restaurants.
