The Spring Hill College men’s basketball team fell 99-98 to Flagler in Tuesday night’s non-conference contest at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

Flagler landed the first punch with a layup, but Bo Barberanswered with a 3-pointer, this combined with two free throws from Isaiah Veal and a dunk by Timothy Reilly put Spring Hill ahead 7-4 early. By the first media timeout, the Badgers led 9-5.

Six of SHC’s next seven points were scored in the paint, four of which came from Jayden Webley. The physical play under the basket kept Spring Hill ahead 16-11 by the second media break.

Flagler surged back by the under-8 media timeout and took a 33-28 lead. Walter Peggs Jr. led the Badgers’ answer with nine of the next 14 points that were scored by the team. The rebuttal by SHC tied the game at 42-42.

The Saints held on to the lead, but Brian Harris hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to keep the Badgers within two points (53-51) at halftime.

Flagler’s lead was cut down to one point, 60-59, by the first media timeout of the second half. Peggs Jr., Barber and Timothy Reilly strung together three 3-pointers and a jumper in the paint to regain a 70-68 lead with 11 minutes left in the game.

The Saints took back the lead, 81-79, by the 7:34 mark. Spring Hill only allowed the Flagler lead to hit double digits for a moment and continued to fight. In the end, the Saints escaped and handed the Badgers a 99-98 loss in the hard-fought battle.

Isaiah Veal and Flagler’s Omar Figueroa both led the game in scoring with 23 points apiece. Reilly led the game in rebounds after collecting seven.

Overall, the Badgers recorded a season-high .596 (34-57) shooting percentage and 34 shots made from the floor.

They Said It
Head Coach Craig Kennedy
On the game
“I thought it was a really good battle against such a quality team. They’re so well coached, they’re so classy in everything they do. That [Omar] Figueroa kid is really, really tough. I thought we showed a lot of grit and character to come back, especially when you’re looking at two of our best defenders being out – Steven [Lyles] and Luka [Erdtmann]. I thought Rolontae Knowles, really stepped up, Jorclay Kaniki got some huge, huge buckets for us. When Timothy [Reilly] got down, I mean Jorclay stepped in. I’m really proud of the guys, how they competed. Our biggest thing is there some areas we’ve got to become more consistent in and that’s going to be a quest for us this year. Boy, that was a fun game to coach, but I’m sure if you were watching, that was a heck of a game to watch.
