Students gathered this past Thursday to watch seven of Spring Hill’s most personable men compete for the Lion King title at Phi Mu’s annual “Mangeant.”
This popular philanthropy event involves many of SHC’s student organizations and has always raised money for a great cause. However, this year was even more special and personal to those involved because 95% of the proceeds went directly to Harry Corbin, a SHC alum who is battling cancer. Corbin’s sister, Hope Corbin, is a junior at Spring Hill and a member of Phi Mu.
Grace Crapps, Phi Mu’s Philanthropy Chair and the event’s coordinator, said that “Phi Mu prides itself on going all out for everything. This year it was even more important that we do so because our efforts would be directly impacting Hope and her family. We’re a sisterhood, and we’ll do whatever it takes to help one another.” The remaining proceeds will go to USA Children & Women’s Hospital, Phi Mu’s philanthropy organization.
Seven male students were elected candidates to represent Spring Hill’s sororities and fraternities as they competed in various stages of the competition, including casual wear, talent, and formal questions. Each of these candidates are encouraged to fundraise and sell tickets to their supporters to raise points for themselves to help them win the Mangeant.
The winner of Mangeant and Phi Mu’s new “Lion King” is Lambda Chi Alpha’s senior, Forrest Fontenot. Fontenot raised a total of $2,185 and said, “Harry Corbin is a Lambda Chi brother of mine, and it meant so much to be able to take home the title in honor of him and to help support his family.” Fontenot further emphasized that “it was incredible to see how the Spring Hill community came together as a whole to support this incredible cause.”
Other winners of the competition was Tau Kappa Epsilon’s Nathan Stephens, who won, “Best in Show” and Sigma Kappa’s representative Bobby Nelms who won “Best Talent.”
Phi Mu raised a grand total of $10,101.17 from Mangeant, which is the most they’ve raised in the past five years. Donations are still being collected for Harry Corbin at www.gofundme.com/f/HealingHarry.
