Running for a Cure with Delta Chi

The Clovers for a Cure 5K race was hosted by Delta Chi, a Spring Hill College fraternity, on March 16. The race occurred entirely on the SHC campus and ended on the Avenue of the Oaks during the early hours of St. Patrick’s day.

“To better incorporate the surrounding Mobile area, we really wanted to go out into the community and develop relationships with numerous businesses in the area.” senior Connor Raley said.

The fraternity hosted a fundraising night at Raising Cane’s in January to help fund the event, and an instructor from Glow Yoga helped lead yoga stretches to warm-up before the race began. After runners finished the race, smoothies from Tropical Smoothie, Chick-Fil-A chicken minis, Irish Cream ice cream from Old Dutch, Carpe Diem coffee, and fresh fruit were provided for all participants.

One of the race coordinators, sophomore Jeremy Sapia explained “For our awards ceremony, all were qualified to receive a discount from Glow Yoga products that day, and everyone received a buy-one-get-one item free gift card from Tropical Smoothie. The top male and female finishers in each age group received medals, and Glow Yoga won our Community Team Spirit Award plaque while Lambda Chi Alpha won the Spring Hill Team Spirit Award plaque.”

The top overall finishers in each sex were both SHC students: senior Johanna Meister and junior Grayson Hetherington. Each winner won a free month of classes at Glow Yoga, a $30 gift card to OK Bicycle Shop, a $100 gift card to Walk-On’s, and a $10 gift card to Old Dutch. Overall, Delta Chi raised $2,708 from the event for the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.
