Spring Hill College volleyball’s Mia Saavedra was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II South Region Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-South First Team, the AVCA announced Wednesday.
Saavedra is the first freshman in program history to receive the Freshman of the Year honor. Her All-South Region First-Team nod is the fourth in program history. Spring Hill has now been represented on the All-Region Team for five straight seasons.
The setter-hitter had a breakout debut season with the Badgers this year. She was named SIAC Newcomer of the Week on two occasions and Offensive Player of the Week once.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Saavedra led the conference and ranked eighth nationally with two triple doubles. She also ranked in the top-10 in the league in assists per set, blocks per set, hitting percentage, total assists and blocks.
