Gavin Johnson, Attorney General of Student Government Association, was verbally terminated on October 26 by President of SGA Daniel Hadley.
According to Hadley, Johnson was removed on the grounds of not following constitutional protocols.
Johnson stated, “I did my job to the best of my ability and I believe everyone on SGA knows that, even the President.” He continued, “I believe the current state of SGA is very hyper-partisan. I served on SGA since 2021 and I have never seen the level of partisanship that I have witnessed this year.”
He continued, “The tool of impeachment has been joked about in the past but it has never been weaponized for personal reasons and that is what scares me about this SGA. What they have unleashed by using this on people they may not like may be used in the future for others’ gain. I believe SGA needs a come-to-gather moment and remember that they are badgers at the end of the day and representative of their class.”
Hadley stated, “Unfortunately, Mr. Johnson has been relieved from his position as Attorney General due to concerns that I had regarding him not following protocols outlined by our Constitution and expectations set forth of his responsibilities. This decision was not made lightly and was decided after consulting with our bylaws, Mr. Johnson, as well as our Advisor.”
Hadley continued, “It is expected that all members of the SGA uphold their responsibilities and commitment to their roles. In the case that there are any violations of the Constitution, we are required to move forward with initiating the judicial process outlined in our Constitution. We have made some good steps in the right direction under my leadership. We are working diligently to strengthen our practices, accountability, and Constitution for all members of the SGA.”
SGA has appointed Molly McIntosh as interim Attorney General until a permanent Attorney General is appointed.
