This fall semester, Melissa Skolnick joins the Spring Hill College community to take on the newly introduced position, Coordinator of Student Integrity and Development. Her primary focus will be managing the school’s conduct system by studying and reporting the campus’s conduct trends, and acting as a resource for students and faculty to gain a greater understanding of Spring Hill’s policies and procedures regarding conduct.
For the 2017-2018 school year, several new staff positions have been added as a means of positively effecting the campus community. Skolnick said she hopes to be seen as more of a resource than a punishing force. “I hope to create greater visibility on campus, and want to build relationships so I can be seen as a resource instead of only being seen as an office for punishment,” she said. “My goal is to foster the growth of individuals in the community to be respectful, good stewards of resources, and leaders.”
With this position, Skolnick will implement programming to aid in the education behind good decision making, and the clarification of policy information and the overall conduct process. She also looks forward to giving students opportunities to hold more of a “stakeholder” position in the SHC community, and voice their ideas, comments and concerns.
Skolnick grew up in New Jersey and later attended Pennsylvania State where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and criminology. In 2015, she moved to Oxford, Miss., where she designed and implemented the Title IX Campus Climate Survey at the University of Mississippi. Here, she also earned her master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Personnel. After finishing her graduate program in May 2017, Skolnick moved to Mobile to begin her position as the new Coordinator for Student Integrity and Development.
Outside of her office, Student Affairs 232, Skolnick can be found walking her dog, Parker, around campus and saying hello to students, staff and faculty. She shares a love for Game of Thrones with much of the student body, and has recently started reading the 4th book. She remarks, “I decided to do things backwards, and watch the show before reading.” As for sports, Skolnick is a huge hockey fan, and roots for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
