In 2012, Spring Hill College (SHC) transitioned its rugby program to varsity status within the athletic department to provide more resources and boost admissions. However, in 2018, the program was reassigned to club sport status. Despite this shift, SHC Rugby has continued to thrive, competing in the Deep South Rugby Conference (DSRC) and the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO).
The team has built a strong record, winning the DSRC Championship in both 2018 and 2019, as well as the NSCRO South Cup in 2019. Students at SHC enjoy rugby home games, often filling the sidelines with tailgates, music, and an atmosphere of school spirit.
Hagan Resendez, a sophomore and former soccer player, joined the team this year. “The team culture is strong,” he said. “Being on the team has given me the opportunity to meet people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.” Resendez also mentioned the club’s relaxed environment, saying how players are there because they genuinely want to be.
Senior player Patrick Kuhn emphasized the unique culture of rugby. “Every time we step on the field together, we go to war with each other, which fosters a strong team bond. What makes rugby special is that you put your body on the line for 80 minutes, and afterward, everyone is friends,” he said.
Recruitment remains an important aspect of the club. “We scout players out of high school by attending games and talking to them about the team,” Resendez explained. “For current SHC students, we welcome anyone willing to play.” The club allows for flexibility in scheduling, which Kuhn appreciates. “The road trips have been some of the most fun experiences I’ve had at Spring Hill,” he said.
Looking ahead, players hope to see the program grow. “I’d like to see us play more notable teams here on the Hill and expand our home 7s tournament,” Resendez shared. Kuhn encouraged prospective students to consider joining. “All of the players on our team truly enjoy Spring Hill and want to see it succeed. We care about the future of the school and show that through our commitment to our sport and putting on a good showing whenever we have a home game,” he said.
With a history of success in a student-led organization, Spring Hill Rugby continues to grow on campus. The team’s dedication and sense of community ensure that rugby will remain a part of the Spring Hill College experience.
