When I first arrived at Spring Hill College, I expected to learn a lot. I expected late nights of studying, early morning coffee runs, and maybe a few new friends along the way. What I did not expect was to find home in the people around me. I may have never met friends from all across the country if not for this little college on the hill in Mobile, Alabama.
College is often described as a place of growth. And while that is true, no one tells you how much that growth comes from the relationships you build. For me, it has been about more than just classes and assignments; it has been sitting outside baseball games with my best friends, walking around campus on a sunny day, and tanning by the Fairways. I have known that no matter where I go on campus, whether it is outside McKinney’s, in the library, or across the Avenue, I will always recognize a familiar face.
Spring Hill is the kind of place where community is seen everywhere on campus. It is working on The SpringHillian alongside my best friends—collaborating, writing, and growing not just as students but as professionals. It is the small classrooms that allow your professors to know your name, and the organizations that welcome you in like family. It is being surrounded by people who not only support your goals but also work beside you to reach their own.
Even when I studied abroad in Bologna, Italy, through the Spring Hill Italy Center, I felt that same sense of connection. Thousands of miles from campus, my friends and I were able to build relationships, make new friends, and explore new places. We took trips to learn and help others around the world. The program provided education classes on other cultures and their hardships, helping us understand and work towards a common goal of making a positive difference.
What has made my experience even more meaningful are the Jesuit values that live in everything we do here. Being men and women for others is not just something we hear during orientation; it becomes part of who we are. Service has shaped the way I see the world, and it has reminded me that success is not only about personal achievement but about lifting others up along the way. Spring Hill has taught me to lead with compassion, to live with intention, and to give back to the community that has given so much to me.
The friendships I have made here are the heart of my college experience. They have made the small moments unforgettable, the late-night talks, the spontaneous road trips, and the all-nighters turn into the best memories. These friends have become my family, and together, we have made this campus feel like home.
Spring Hill has given me more than just an education; it has given me a deep appreciation for the kind of college experience that values closeness, community, and service. I came to Spring Hill to earn a degree, but I will leave with so much more. I love this school. I love my friends. And I will always be grateful for the little college on the hill that brought us all together.
