The Spring Hill College beach volleyball team opened the Badger Beach Bash with wins over Hendrix (3-0) and Huntingdon (4-0), but suffered a close 3-2 loss to Tusculum at the Gulf Shores Public Beach on Friday.

The Sandy Badgers battled all three matches through rainy conditions throughout the first day of their home tournament. Their first match against Hendrix was delayed by an hour due to the weather.

Lily Mascari and Elizabeth Hardouin took care of business in their first wins of the season, defeating their opponent on the No. 2 court 21-18, 21-14. Jaylyne Bell and Ashlyn Whiteside dominated their first set on the No. 4 court 21-7 and finished things off with a 21-17 victory to secure the second point.

Mikayla Boyer and Mia Saavedra clinched the match with a 21-11, 21-12 victory on the No. 1 court. Whiteside and Saavedra each secured the first win of their collegiate career.

Spring Hill fell 3-2 in a close battle with Tusculum. The Pioneers claimed victories on the No. 2, 3 and 4 courts.

Emily Weinzapfel and Isabella Muti earned SHC’s first point of the match after taking their game to three sets (21-9, 17-21, 15-13). Boyer and Saavedra continued rolling with a 21-17, 21-16 win on the No. 1 court.

In their third and final match of the day, the Sandy Badgers swept the Hawks of Huntingdon, 4-0. Boyer and Saavedra finished the day undefeated with a 21-14, 21-8 win on court No. 1.

Ally Lane and Linnea Beger tacked on a win on court No. 2 (21-15, 21-10), their first of the year. The duos of Lily Mascari and Elizabeth Hardouin (21-13, 21-11) and Weinzapfel and Muti (21-14, 21-11) also claimed victories on their respective courts.
