Preseason Q&A – Head Coach Craig McVey

Preseason+Q%26A+%E2%80%93+Head+Coach+Craig+McVey

Spring Hill College Track & Field Head Coach Craig McVeypreviewed the 2024 season on Monday.

How have preseason preparations been going?
“Preseason prep has been going really well. Everyone is working really, hard getting ready for a great outdoor season. With January being colder than usual and rain arriving at less-than-ideal times. I’m proud of how everyone has been focused on what we’ve needed to do.”

Which newcomers should we watch out for this season and why?
“Anyone that has a ‘FR’ by their name we’re counting on big time.  We have several new juniors who will give us depth we haven’t had. Simply – our new team members are going to add a lot to both squads. Look for breakout performances by many. Obviously, Evelyn Hererra had a great freshman cross country season, earning all-conference honors. She’ll continue this spring where she left off in the fall.”

What are some team goals heading into the 2024 season?
“It’s all about our SIAC Conference meet. We really want to have both squads finish in the top-5 at our conference meet. With 14 women’s programs and 15 men’s programs competing, it’s not your normal 9-10 team conference meet, it’s tough. Our men had their highest finish ever last spring (5th). We really believe we’re knocking on the door for a top-4 finish. Our women’s team is young [and] I’m confident they’ll surprise some people.”

Are you looking forward to any particular meet on your schedule?
“Every meet we have is important. We’re looking forward to our conference meet, obviously. Returning to the Emory Thrills in the Hills Invitational on March 22-23 is a meet that launches us toward our conference meet. There are a huge number of teams from all over the country, great competition for our entire program. It’s truly like a mini-national meet. Over the years we’ve had people win their respective events there. It’s a meet that really replicates to a degree our conference meet on a bigger scale. A meet that everyone learns to bring their best game to. The great thing about Emory is when we get home and go back to work everyone knows exactly what they must do to be ready for our outdoor championship and that’s huge!”
