Spring Hill College Alumni Class of 1973 is donating a Meditation Center to showcase the influence the college’s mission statement has on current students, alumni, and the community. With this gift, the class is offering a chance for current students to submit a sculpture idea that conveys “nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.”

Spearhead of this project, Margaret Hutson stated, “We are all a part of the beautiful tapestry that Spring Hill has woven through time and we want this Meditation Garden/Gathering Place to honor and capture the essence of the Hill’s mission of “cura personalis” – the care of the mind, body & spirit of all who enter here to come of age.” Students on campus are encouraged to submit a sculpture design that will be weather-resistant, permanent, and kinetic. Drawings or small-sized models are accepted and must be submitted with a written explanation. Students can submit more than one design as well. A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the chosen design. The design will be made to size with the help of sculpture artists, the student, and the class of ‘73. Any students can submit their designs, or they can design with a partner or group.

The area for the designated meditation space will be in front of the biology and chemistry buildings. This oak-shaded location is hoped to encourage students to gather and reflect on their time on the Hill or take a break from the stress of classes.

Hutson prioritizes the collaboration between the decades of students at Spring Hill and wants to acknowledge being one of the most beautiful college campuses in the Southeast. Huston concluded, “Here’s your chance to become an enduring part of the legacy that is SHC. Your name will be memorialized as the artist of this special piece for generations to admire.”

Please submit any work to Wanda Sullivan at [email protected] or Megan Shifflett at [email protected] . The deadline to submit is March 29, 2024. Finalists will be announced on April 12, 2024. The class of ‘73 will vote on those finalists and the winner will be announced to the public on April 19, 2024.
