This weekend, two sororities on campus put on their annual spring fundraising events to raise money for their chapters’ philanthropies. Spring Hill students assembled on the rugby field on Saturday for Phi Mu’s Kickballing for Kids and again on Sunday for Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash.
Phi Mu held their annual kickball tournament Kickballing for Kids on Saturday afternoon on the rugby field. Six teams competed for the first place title including all four of the
IFC fraternities on campus and two of Spring Hill’s Panhellenic sororities. The event carried out in tournament style with teams being eliminated throughout the afternoon. Teams could donate extra money to Phi Mu to have players stay in the games without ever being tagged out.
Students set up blankets across the field and watched the tournament unfold while enjoying pizza and water provided by the sorority. Many prospective students on campus for Welcome to the Hill stopped by while touring the campus to catch a glimpse of the event.
Phi Mu’s philanthropy chair Grace Crapps said the chapter raised $852 during the event. Crapps said, “All the money goes toward our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital USA Women’s and Children’s which is just down the street from Spring Hill.”
On Sunday morning, students gathered once again on the rugby field for Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash. The event consisted of water-themed field day games and a dance competition. Six organizations on campus participated in Anchor Splash including three of the Panhellenic sororities and three of the IFC fraternities.
Although the event took place on Sunday, teams earned points towards the event the week before by painting banners and hanging them up in the cafeteria and putting decorations on the doors of Delta Gamma members.
After the organizations finished all of the water games, each team performed a dance to earn final points. Each organization choreographed a dance centered around the event’s water theme and performed it in front of the other participants and attendees at the event as well as a panel of Delta Gamma judges.
Annie Bojan, Delta Gamma’s philanthropy chair, planned Anchor Splash. She said, “The best part was watching it all come together the day of and seeing how much fun everyone was having, knowing it was all for a great cause.”
The event ended with an award ceremony. Sigma Kappa took home first place overall while TKE placed second. Bojan estimated that the chapter raised around $5,000 from contributions from their members as well as from donations from the six participating teams. All of the proceeds earned through this event went towards Delta Gamma’s philanthropy Service for Sight.
