In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Pi Rho chapter is doing its part by selling orange ribbons in the back of the student center. Gabrielle Brumfield, Vice President of Alpha Kappa Alpha, says, “We hope to draw attention with the bright orange ribbons, which could lead to an increase of ribbon sales. The proceeds will then be utilized to sponsor a Thanksgiving dinner for a local shelter in the Mobile area.”

According to AL.com, American consumers and retailers waste an estimated 133 million pounds – about $162 billion worth – of food annually. This shocking statistic brings light to the amount of food that is lacking in communities around the country. Hunger Awareness week takes place the week before Thanksgiving dedicated to those who do not have resources to feed themselves. Alpha Kappa Alpha is taking measures to bring awareness to hunger prevention on Spring Hill’s campus.

Alpha Kappa Alpha will be purchasing these food items that will then be donated and prepared for the local shelters here in Mobile, Al. To support this movement, students and organizations on campus can purchase orange ribbons or receive more information on the cause by visiting the AKA table in the student center.
