At the end of this semester, Dr. Rebecca Cantor will be leaving Spring Hill College to pursue a new role as President at Austin College. Dr. Cantor has been with Spring Hill College since 2022 and has continued to make an impact throughout her time on campus. She has many accomplishments here, but is mainly proud of increased retention amongst students. Dr. Cantor is proud of the community she has helped build here at Spring Hill, continuing to advocate for just being yourself. Cantor stated, “I hope I helped students see that the best way to lead is your authentic self–even in big jobs, we should care deeply.” As Dr. Cantor steps off this campus at the end of the semester, she has hopes that the campus community will continue to grow as their authentic self. Cantor also stated that she is proud of the “stoplight survey, registration round up, and other ways to support our students from registration to graduation.” Cantor stated, “I also helped with the strategic plan, and I have represented the college internally and externally.” Dr. Cantor cares strongly about the students who go here, and she does her best at preparing these students for the real world, pointing out what Spring Hill and Austin College both have that she loves. “The most important thing we offer at Spring Hill and at Austin College is a liberal arts foundation that develops students’ critical thinking, communication, and ethical reasoning while deepening the wells students have to draw from throughout their lives,” Cantor stated. Sophomore Andrew Tauli shares how Dr. Cantor has made a difference at Spring Hill since he has been here. He noted that Dr. Cantor made the campus a “more unique and interesting place,” also highlighting, “there are always opportunities around me to meet with professors and get the tutoring I need.” This has made an impact on Tauli, and he hopes that she can help continue to make an impact on students. Dr. Cantor shares with us the importance of showing up, even for the little things. Cantor stated, “Things like eating in the caf, cheering at games, walking around, learning names, and keeping your office door open really add up and matter.” Showing up has been one of Cantor’s biggest takeaways as a leader; being there, being seen, can mean a lot for just one person. Sophomore Nealy Sankey shares how great of a mentor Dr. Cantor has been for her. “She has always been kind and supportive of everyone,” Sankey stated, “She is so smart, well-spoken, and clearly amazing at her job.” Sankey shares how she will miss Dr. Cantor, but it still very excited for her future. “I’m so sad that she is leaving, but I’m so excited for her too because I know she is going to be such a fantastic President,” Sankey said. Although Dr. Cantor is going to take on the role of President at a new school, it is still so hard for her to leave Spring Hill. Cantor stated, “I am grateful for the opportunity to implement everything I’ve learned here as president of another incredible, Top-100 liberal arts institution in the Texoma tech hub – just an hour north of Dallas.” Cantor is excited for what is to come at this new institution. “I’m very excited to work with the faculty, staff, students, and Board to build an even stronger future and help our students change the world around them for the better!” Although it is very hard to leave Spring Hill, Cantor remains grateful for her time here and is ready to advocate for more students as President.
