The College Football Playoffs (CFP) is an annual postseason tournament to determine the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). This is the highest level of college football within the U.S. This setup includes four teams playing in two semi-final games, where the winner of each semi-final advances to the CFP National Championship.
However, this type of setup has only recently been played within the last four years. Prior to 2014, the college football world utilized a polls or computer rankings system to select teams for the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), where two semi-final games rotated among six major bowl games: the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl. With the college football world turning to a different style of postseason play, many fans including myself have become even more frustrated.
At the conclusion of the college football season, a playoff selection committee chose Clemson University, Oklahoma University, University of Georgia and University of Alabama as the top four teams. This CFP postseason system has many disagreeing because of the rankings of the top finalists. There have been undefeated teams in the past years that have not been selected into the CFP. This year, University of Central Florida is 12-0, yet only ranked as the 12th ranked team in the FBS.
This is unfair to these deserving teams just because a few people in a committee say they’re undeserving. I believe that a larger playoff bracket would suffice in a better CFP system. Instead of having only four teams playing for the chance to win the NCAA CFP National Championship, I believe that the college football world would benefit from an eight-team bracket playoff system. This would enable more football teams the opportunity they deserve to play for a championship. This would also allow more games to be televised and watched during the postseason tournament for the fans.
