For Spring Hill College students studying abroad at the Italy Center in Bologna, the experience goes far beyond traditional classroom learning, offering life-changing lessons in independence, cultural adaptation, and international opportunities. The city is home to one of the world’s oldest universities, creating a vibrant atmosphere that aligns with SHC’s program themes.
Junior Janie Spratley describes daily life at the center: “The schedule is pretty similar to a standard Spring Hill schedule; however, we don’t have classes on Fridays, so we just have the same Monday, Wednesday classes, and then Tuesday, Thursday. This way we get Fridays off for travel!” Students balance coursework, travel opportunities, and immersion in Italian culture.
Living overseas presents unique challenges. Senior Carleigh Cavanaugh reflected: “Honestly, the hardest part has been being so far from home and getting used to all the little differences in daily life. Things like figuring out train schedules, language barriers, or even shopping in a grocery store took some adjusting. But I’ve learned to be patient and laugh it off, those moments end up being the ones you remember most.”
Phelan explained how the experience shaped their worldview: “I learned a lot about social justice and how it connects to culture and history. I also learned to slow down and appreciate life more! Italians really know how to enjoy the moment.” Spratley added, “If you order a latte past noon in Italy, you’ll get some pretty dirty looks from the old lady working at the coffee shop.”
Cavanaugh describes the lasting benefits: “I think studying abroad helps you grow in ways you can’t inside a classroom. It forces you to adapt, communicate, and see the world from a new perspective. You come back more mature and open-minded, and you appreciate not just the new culture you experienced, but your own life at home a lot more, too.”
For students considering the program, Phelan offers encouraging words: “Stop thinking about it and just do it! It’s totally normal to feel nervous, but once you’re there, you’ll realize how incredible the experience is. Say yes to as much as you can, meet new people, and be open to stepping out of your comfort zone.”
